[Date: December 1st. Time: 1:30 PM.] [Everyone is on aboard the Xu Huan travelling back to Shanghai in style. It's a pretty big ship, but that doesn't mean that people don't chance to meet. We find one of our agents, Ryan McIntyre at the bow of the ship. Whether he's admiring the waves or just going out to get fresh air it's hard to tell, but the ocean air is inviting. Maybe some other people decided to explore the ship as well. Who knows? We'll find out soon.] [Loading Dossier...] * Makoto thumpstumps his way out of the damn cabin on a pair of horribly ugly and awkwardly improvised crutches. * Ryan is leaning against the rail of the ship, looking out and away from the sun. His hair's combed and once again tied back, which is a nice change of pace compared to recently. * Makoto thumpstumps his way around the last corner on his way to the bow, sees Ryan, and curses mightily. (Mightly = loudly? ;P) ( Mightily = Loudly, fluently, and above all, abrasively. Abrasive enough to scrape paint off the walls. ) * Ryan hears this, amazingly, and looks passively over at Makoto. "Oh. It's you." Of course it's me. Who else would be walking around in cruches? Sure as hell not the psycho whorebitch. Keep it up. I might forget how much I missed your colorful language. Yeah, yeah, whatever. Nobody misses me. 'sagainst the rules. * Ryan looks vaguely amused by that. "Thought you didn't follow rules." Everything follows rules. So you just made your own set. Nope. I break the rules, I don' make 'em. * Ryan turns fully now, back to the rail. He leans back against it. "So, why can't I break that rule?" You don't seem like the type. Then again... neither did Xiang-Fei. People can surprise ya. You don't know that much any of us, do you? * Ryan scratches at the back of his head. "She was sorry. Not like it matters to you, but she was." No, she's not sorry. Not yet. * Ryan raises an eyebrow and keeps his full attention on Makoto, as he has since the beginning. "You're going to make her sorry?" Eventually. I want to cool off first. Yeah, I bet not knowing what the hell happened would make someone upset. And I don't think going after her's a good idea, but... * Ryan shrugs. "If you guys wanna kill each other, just keep me out of it." I'm not going to kill her. That'd be to easy, and besides, she's Family now. Whether I like it or not. * Ryan chuckles. "Yeah? Why'd you adopt her?" * Makoto snorts loudly. Like I had a choice. Well, if she's family, you've got a twisted way of showing it. I haven't killed her. That could've been a REAL scorpion, and not placed so obviously. That isn't enough? * Ryan frowns. "What're you talking about?" What, nobody told you about that? * Makoto snickers. I broke into her room back at HQ, put a rubber scorpion on her pillow. Hid it under a cardboard note so that when she picked it up, the tail of the scorpion sprung up like it was striking. * Ryan blinks. "Yeah?" She came running around the halls yelling for help because someone tried to kill her. And you told her it was all a joke? It wasn't a joke. It was a warning. * Ryan folds his arms. "And you told her that. Good reason for her to think you're gonna kill her." If she's your 'family', I don't want any part of it. * Makoto grins. "Too late. You joined up." * Ryan snorts. "Can't believe how stupid you are. Keep convincing her you're a threat, and you're *going* to be put down, by somebody. Hell, you already are a threat. What am I saying?" You shouldn't even be up here. [A voice answers from the side of Ryan, curiously, "Who shouldn't be up here?"] He thinks _I_ shouldn't be up here. Not that I care. Besides. I'm not a threat. Not right now, anyway. I dunno what the hell's up with this "mind control" crap. [Keyoumi comes walking around the corner, arms folded across. She's replaced her wrappings and is looking at both of them curiously.] Even without a broken knee, I'm no match for Xiang-Fei. Not in a stand-up fight, anyway. * Keyoumi looks at Ryan and back to Makoto carefully and frowns. "I could come back if you're preoccupied..." Eh. Not like we're doing anything but jawing. * Ryan keeps his eyes on Makoto. "Maybe, maybe not. But just because you're not a match doesn't mean you aren't a threat. 'Sides, that glove that mysteriously appeared on your hand probably gives you something of an edge." He glances over at Keyoumi. "Afternoon, Senada-san." Not when I can't lay so much as a finger on her. And that doesn't bother you? In all the times I've fought Xiang-Fei, both in memory and apparently NOT in memory, I've never laid so much as a finger on her. And no, it doesn't particularly bother me. Why would it? How about the glove. Does that bother you? How about losing days of your life. Does that? Fuckin' DUH? The glove's kinda cool... so long as I can have it on my terms. This whole won't come off thing has GOT to go. * Keyoumi nods respectfully to Ryan, arms still wrapped around her. "Afternoon, Mister McIntyre." She looks over at Makoto and sighs, starting to respond but glancing at Ryan and keeping quiet. Losing days of my life... oh fuckin' well. I'm more concerned that this fucker's apparently been controlling me, and he's gonna pay for it. He's fucked with the wrong scorpion this time. Amounts to the same thing. Lemme see that glove sometime; I might be able to figure out a way to remove it. I can't exactly give you the glove, you know. You'll have to be in my hallowed presence long enough to get rid of it. * Ryan says, dryly, "Trust me, I can't wait." * Keyoumi leans casually back against the railing and closes her eyes. "What's still a puzzle is why exactly they wanted you specifically. If they really did." Probably because I'm the next best thing to Xiang-Fei in hand-to-hand combat. Yes, but you're making an assumption there that I don't particularly care to think about. What, that they really want Xiang-Fei? Imagine HER with this glove. No... * Makoto ALMOST slams his fist down on the railing of the ship, but pulls it just in time. * Keyoumi closes her eyes and speaks softly. "That they know the abilities of Xiang-Fei and yourself." * Ryan frowns. "And if they know about those two, the rest of us?" * Keyoumi opens her eyes slowly. "I think that would certainly follow..." * Ryan winces. "Great. But it figures." Now we can't be completely certain of all of this. We don't know how much they would know. But if Mister Shosuro's right and they picked him because they know he's second only to Xiang-Fei, then that implies they'd know a lot more as well. I thought you were gonna stop calling me that. * Makoto scowls at Keyoumi. Sorta goes with the leaks, though, doesn't it? Maybe it's the same group. It could be... * Keyoumi frowns and looks solidly back at Makoto. "This is the information which I received when you first were recruited. They usually do thorough background checks on all potential candidates. Are you saying the information they obtained was falsified?" I'm saying it was... premature. Wishful thinking, perhaps. * Ryan looks back at Makoto and blinks. "Hrm?" What's so hard to understand about this? I don't have a family name. I won't have one for quite some time, most likely. Shosuro was just an assumed name I used sometimes. Eventually it will be my real name, but until then, let it lie. * Keyoumi frowns. "You told me once you were going to try to buy a name." Precisely. It takes money to create a new family. So if you're gonna use it, why're you so adamant about people not calling you 'Shosuro'? Because it's not mine yet. * Keyoumi looks up and whistles idly. "And since when was a thief so concerned about what's his and what isn't hmmm?" Maybe I want this to be "legit." * Keyoumi reaches for the railing and stretches her back. "So you're having a change of heart?" * Makoto grins. "I wouldn't bet on it." Was gonna say, thought you were interested in breaking the rules. * Keyoumi sighs and gets off the railing a bit. "That's a pity." She steps forward a bit and looks Makoto over carefully. Anybody got a deck of cards? * Keyoumi looks over at Ryan and speaks idly to Makoto. "I prefer shogi or chess myself." Huh? What about 'em? * Ryan snerks faintly. He glances out at the ocean before going back to watching the conversation. * Keyoumi glances back at Makoto calmly without changing her expression. "Nevermind. What did you want it for?" Practice. * Keyoumi raises an eyebrow. "Practice?" Somebody got a coin? I'll demonstrate. Hell, even a pebble or somethin'll work. * Keyoumi blinks and tosses Makoto a 5-yen piece. * Ryan watches curiously. * Makoto snaps the coin out of the air in a flash and lets his crutches lean against the rail. He balances easily on one leg and holds the coin up. Okay... see the coin. Watch the coin move, and then tell me which hand it ends up in. * Makoto tosses the coin back and forth, slowly enough so that his observers can at least see it. * Ryan nods slowly. "All right." * Makoto stops with the coin in one hand, though which may not be clear, exactly. * Makoto holds his hands up. "Well?" Care to hazard a guess? * Keyoumi thinks for a second, then points. "Left." * Makoto opens his left hand. No coin. Care to guess again? * Ryan eyes that hand, then... "Right. Why not." * Makoto opens the right hand. No coin. Where'd it go, then? * Makoto lowers his arm and the coin slides easily out of his shirt sleeve into his hand. That's a VERY basic version of the Three Card Monty gag. * Keyoumi snerks. "So you're a magician. Bet you're great at parties." I could be, if I were into that sort of thing. I'm just good with my hands. And fast. VERY fast. * Keyoumi folds her arms again and leans up against the railing with her back. "So why are you showing us?" Hey, you're the one who asked. By the way, you can have your coin back if you can find it. * Ryan makes no move to look for it. "Bet that took a lot of practice." * Makoto shrugs. * Keyoumi lets a thin smile creep on her face. "You must think I'm awful stingy if I'd go through the trouble to search for 5 yen." Seemed like a good thing to learn at the time. Yeah, yeah. Just check behind your ear already. * Makoto rolls his eyes. You wouldn't want it falling out at an inopportune time. * Keyoumi smiles and doesn't reach for it. "I think I'll keep it. It looks good on me, doesn't it, boys?" She turns this way and that, showing off her new ear accessory. * Ryan takes a look and chuckles. "Yeah, I'd say it does." Yeah, yeah. Whatever you say, bosslady. * Keyoumi reaches up and takes the coin off and pouts, putting her hands on her hips. "You know something, Makoto? You really need to learn how to take things in stride." Maybe. * Makoto shrugs. I'm not feeling very easygoing right now. Go fig. * Keyoumi sighs. "No, I suppose not. But you seem to blame the situation more than your own personal judgement a lot, and that bothers me." * Makoto frowns. * Keyoumi looks at Makoto calmly and reaches up absently to her forehead with her fingers, brushing back her bangs. "It's the truth." What, precisely, is your point? * Ryan leans against the rail and lets Keyoumi do the talking. * Keyoumi looks Makoto in the eyes. "You tell me." Unuh. I don't play that game. ( I just had to resist the urge to say "Homey don't play dat." ) (Ha!) You wanna say something, say it. * Keyoumi folds her arms. "And I want you to figure it out for yourself. If you can't figure things out on your own, how can you expect to do your job?" I never said I didn't understand. I just want you to come out and say it. And I want you to prove that you actually DO get it without me saying so. Because if you don't, no amount of me telling you will make it sink in. * Makoto rolls his eyes. * Makoto turns away from Keyoumi. * Keyoumi frowns and tilts her head. "And that's why people don't trust you, Makoto." * Makoto slams his ungauntleted fist into the ship's railing. * Makoto grabs his makeshift crutches and nearly breaks them thumpstumping away. * Keyoumi rolls her eyes and leans back slowly. "Getting irate at something like that will never help you improve, Makoto." * Makoto makes no answer as he rounds the corner. * Ryan watches him go, as passively as he did when Makoto showed up. "He's a ticking bomb." * Keyoumi rubs the front locks of her hair with her hand and raises up slowly. "In more ways than one now that he has that gauntlet. But I can't say it's abnormal for some new recruits. I just wish he'd be broken in faster..." * Ryan looks at Keyoumi. "Are you kidding? He's stubborn as Xiang-Fei is." * Keyoumi frowns and looks up at Ryan slowly beneath her lashes. "I suppose they are a little similar...I still can't believe...did it really sound like I was ordering him crippled?" * Ryan hesitates, then shakes his head. "Not to me. But to Xiang... she probably forced herself not to think of him as helpless." Really, it's hard to tell anymore. * Keyoumi turns towards Ryan and brushes her fingers through her hair, sighing. "It's not working, is it? This team?" * Ryan lets out a sigh of his own. They- we didn't pick each other. But we're stuck together. That's a rather roundabout way of saying "No, it isn't, Senada-san." * Ryan smirks faintly. "Yeah, but it's also saying, 'We don't have a choice, Senada-san.' So we'd better learn how to make it work." Though in Xiang and Makoto's case, I have no fucking clue. * Keyoumi smirks slightly and turns to look at Ryan out of the corner of her eye. "Ryan McIntyre being blunt. I suppose the world is coming to an end now. Pity, I was just starting to enjoy it." * Keyoumi closes her eyes for a second, then opens them again, switching to Irish. <"We really should be more cautious on this ship though."> * Ryan shrugs easily and switches to Irish, too. "" * Keyoumi turns to the railing and folds her arms over it, looking out over the waves. <"Let's just say I've had my own troubles along the way.."> * Ryan tilts his head, keeping Keyoumi's face in view. * Keyoumi smiles wistfully. <"I suppose not. How about you, Mister McIntyre? Do you enjoy life?"> * Ryan gives a faint smile. It looks almost sad. "" * Keyoumi shakes her head softly. <"No, Mister McIntyre. Don't blame corporate affairs on karma."> * Keyoumi closes her eyes softly and whispers, almost to herself, but making sure it's loud enough so Ryan can hear, or at least read her lips. "Genevieve Rempton...Genevieve Rempton..." * Ryan loses the smile. "" * Keyoumi opens her eyes again. "" * Ryan looks at Keyoumi for a moment, then turns to gaze at the ocean. He's silent for some time before he speaks up. "" He chuckles dryly. "" <"A year can really change people, Mister McIntyre. I mean...look at me."> * Keyoumi closes her eyes again and lets out a slow sigh. <"It must have been very soon after your group of researchers disbanded then..."> * Ryan goes back to watching Keyoumi. "" <"She didn't stay with us all that long from what I remember. She might have actually come straight to us after the situation occurred. She never wanted to tell us what it was but we've seen it before. It's one of the only reasons people would actively seek us out."> * Ryan shakes his head. "" * Keyoumi closes her eyes and lets out a slow sigh. <"Besides, the comm officer who sent her on the last mission before she disappeared soon retired.."> * Keyoumi then nods to Ryan's question. * Ryan frowns. "" " <"She WAS good. Amazingly good from what few missions I heard from Sean. We haven't worked together that much to tell you the truth."> * Ryan chuckles. "" * Keyoumi closes her mouth in a thin smile. <"Sean said she "wasn't half bad." That's about as close to a compliment he'll ever get."> * Ryan nods. "" * Keyoumi closes his mouth in a slight frown and stares out into the ocean, commenting idly. <"He's not a bad guy, really, Mister McIntyre. He's just a little...brusque."> <"So what else would you take my word on, Mister McIntyre?"> * Ryan raises an eyebrow, keeping his eyes on Keyoumi. "" * Keyoumi closes her eyes and lets out a sly smile. <"You tell me."> * Ryan grins suddenly. "" * Keyoumi leans on her hand against the railing and turns to look at Ryan, her hair flopping down over the edge. <"Well, that's a better answer than Mister Shosuro gave. Well done."> * Ryan gives her a very short, European-style bow. He pulls it off rather well, considering. "" * Keyoumi folds her arm and rests on her elbow, still looking softly up at Ryan. <"Really now. I thought you aimed to kill."> * Ryan grimaces and looks down and away. * Keyoumi breathes out slowly and goes back to looking out at the waves. <"This is your first time, isn't it..?"> * Ryan nods, not that Keyoumi can see it. He takes a deep breath. "" * Keyoumi winces, just slightly, but Ryan can probably see it before she forces herself back to her normal face. <"You say that as if I've gone through that experience dozens of times."> * Ryan gives her a pained look, then steps away from the railing and holds his hands out, palms showing. "" * Keyoumi looks over at him and steps away from the railing, her mouth a thin line. <"Yes. But I know you, Ryan. Yes or no, you'd much prefer the truth over the answer you want to hear."> * Keyoumi brushes her hair and lets out a long sigh, leaning over the railing and hunkering down low in a sulk. <"And I'm not going to be like your former employers. I'm going to tell you the truth. It doesn't get easier if you don't have a predisposition to seeing people die in the first place. And frankly, I wouldn't WANT to ever be completely desensitized to it."> * Ryan takes a moment to digest those words, then nods. "" * Keyoumi turns to look at him. <"Now then, did you really prefer that I would have just said "Yes, it does get easier?""> * Ryan hooks his hands in his pockets. * Ryan shrugs, keeping his hands hooked and offering a tiny grin. "" * Keyoumi tilts her head to the side and blinks. <"What about Aaron?"> * Keyoumi turns with her back to the railing and pushes herself off of it. <"I believe you're right. Funny how an ex-groupie would be so...well, fit for this type of work."> <"Although I guess that part of it comes from his acting..."> * Keyoumi smiles thinly. <"I did some homework. Don't get Mister Copland near a concert, whatever you do."> * Ryan snickers. "" <"Theater, translator, guitar...he's had some intriguing interests..."> * Keyoumi chuckles. <"Could say that."> She lets out a breath and adds, <"Though despite everything, I couldn't find anything PARTICULARLY suspicious. At least not yet."> * Ryan waves vaguely. "" <"Not to the extent of you or I, Mister McIntyre, but yes. For a company in Tokyo."> * Ryan nods. * Keyoumi looks up at the sky for a second and thinks back. <"Oh dear, I slipped. That's not like me."> * Ryan looks vaguely amused. "" <"Lanford. His middle name's Copland. But I'm certain you can."> * Ryan looks off into the ocean. "" * Ryan looks questioningly at Keyoumi. "" * Keyoumi smiles slightly. <"I asked that way because I knew that'd be the answer."> * Ryan laughs. "<'s not a test if you already know the answer, is it?>" He pauses to think about that. * Keyoumi nods. <"She seems rather too...simple to lie."> * Ryan nods.
